PREGNANCY

Once you find out you are pregnant you have a number of options for ongoing care. Your regular family doctor can transition you to a maternity care provider such as a primary care obstetric clinic, a registered midwife or an obstetrician.

Primary Care Obstetric Clinic
A primary care obstetric clinic is staffed by family doctors who provide full maternity care. After delivery, your care then transfers back to your family doctor.

Midwife
Midwives provide care for healthy pregnancies from early pregnancy onwards, and up to six weeks after birth. You can find out more about midwives on the BC Midwives Website.

Obstetrician
Obstetricians are doctors with special education and training in the medical management of pregnancy, labour, and birth, including those deemed to have a high-risk pregnancy. Obstetricians often have limitations on whom they can see based on factors such as geography, capacity and the medical complexity of the pregnancy. Obstetricians do not accept referrals directly from patients.
More information on what constitutes a high-risk pregnancy can be found here.

If you are unsure as to which provider suits your individual needs speak to your family doctor.
